Small Animal Surgery
Through our small animal surgical facility we can provide for most of your pets surgical needs. From basic procedures such as neutering, to more intense procedures, such as bone plating or emergency soft tissue surgery, we can handle most surgical cases.
Any surgical experience at our hospital begins with a thorough physical exam. This is followed by any lab tests that may be needed to pinpoint potential problems. We require all dogs over 6 months of age be heartworm tested or on preventative before being anesthetized.
Depending on the patient’s condition, further tests such as CBC and surgical profiles may be needed to test for infection, anemia, kidney disease, diabetes, liver disease, etc. Most pets over the age of 5 will require basic screening tests. In some cases, radiographs may be needed, if indicated by history or physical exam findings.
We have many options concerning anesthesia, and decide what to use based on:
- Type and length of procedure,
- Level of potential pain,
- Results of physical exam and lab tests.
All patients are put on a gas anesthesia machine and have constant flow oxygen provided during surgery. During surgery your pet is constantly monitored using a pulse oximeter. This provides for heart rate and tells use the amount of oxygen that is actually reaching the tissues. We also monitor respiratory rate and may use an EKG. Depending on the procedure, IV fluids may be required.
For the surgeries themselves, we have a wide range of equipment and instruments from a Luxar Laser unit to bone plating equipment. For any surgical procedures beyond our capabilities, we refer to one of the universities or the veterinary specialty clinic in Overland Park.
We are a firm believer in providing complete pain control. This starts before surgery and continues with take home medication in many cases. There is no need for any animal to go home in severe pain with the many great medications available.
We also provide basic dental services for your pets. Periodontal disease can greatly shorten your pet’s life. We can help you extend their life by maintaining the health of the teeth and gums. An ultrasonic scaler is use to remove plaque then the teeth are polished. Extractions can be performed for diseased teeth. At this time we are not providing for more advanced, i.e. root canals, etc., but can refer you to specialists if needed.
We fully use the services of the University of Missouri , Kansas State and a veterinary referral clinic to solve those extra rough cases. If advanced care is needed we have no problem referring your pet to any of these facilities.
